Has anyone used a Balmar regulator on a Delco alternator with an internal
regulator. If so can you point me to instructions on by-passing the
regulator if it is in fact necessary.
The alternator came with the boat a 30U. Had it rebuild and tested...the
rebuilder found that it is capable of 150 AMPS! Since the rebuild if really
puts out power but at low RPMs it loads the engine down. The Balmar should
solve this problem.

I can’t give you instructions but suspect it’s fairly simple. I’d suggest you try the place that did the rebuild and get a price for the Balmar from them and see what they’d charge to do the work. Based on my experience, it is one of those rare times when paying to have it done is surprisingly cheap.
Sounds like you’re aware but if not, make sure the Balmar model you get has the ramp up start feature. It takes well over a minute before you’re getting max charge. Makes starting engine easier and saves the belt from the sudden load.
I took my Iskra alternator to my local shop and had it converted from “Negative” to “Positive”(for compatibility with Balmar) for around $65. Your Delco is probably “Positive” already.
They also sold me a Balmar regulator, hooked it to alternator and tested and showed me exactly how to hook it up on boat. Bypassing the internal reg was apparently trivial but because of the N to P conversion, it’s apparently not simple for me to go back to the internal regulator. You might ask if it’s simple in your case just in case Balmar ever fails.
BTW: I was surprised that their price for the alternator was only a few dollars more than best price I could find on internet. And they had a very good package deal for zap stop type device, battery and temp sensors that I was unaware of and made getting package a no brainer.
