Persistence (Universal M35V with Hurth trannie ) has always had a slight wetness at the bottom end of the shift lever (at least for the 20 years I have been lucky enough to sail her) but on our cruise this year the wetness has become more of a slight drip when we are motoring. I am monitoring the fluid level and have plenty aboard to replenish, but would like to hear of others’ experiences in addressing the issue. Last trannie oil change May 2018, but current situation has only developed this season.

If the collective wisdom is a seal change at the gearshift lever, is this something for trained hands or can 10 thumbs tackle it?

You didn’t say which model Hurth but it looks pretty straight forward to me. See page 56 of the attached manual. Order the seal and gasket. Before removing the four bolts, mark the lever and shaft so they go back exactly like they came apart. However, I remember someone else on this discussion list replacing that seal in the past and hopefully he’ll answer up.

Thanks Joe, I appreciate your feedback and the manual. I will confirm the model and order the parts.

Just hauled out the Universal manual — I have the V-drive and all V-drives have the 150 Hurth model — thanks again Joe.

Bill,

You have a Hurth HBW15V.
ZF Transmissions purchased Hurth some years ago. The current ZF model is 15MIV. I think it is identical to yours.

Buy a genuine ZF parts. I tried a new seal from an after market supplier. That seal did not stop the shift shaft leak. The genuine ZF seal did stop the leak.

Thanks for the info, Ward – any gotchas or special concerns in replacing?

Mark the position of the shift lever on the shaft as Joe recommended.
Read the instructions. Contained therein is a small dimension, thousandths, space between the shift lever and housing. Do not put the shift lever tight against the housing.
The job should be pretty simple.

Hi Friends
I bought Razzmatazz, my Nonsuch 30 in January and have been upgrading her for cruising. I recently removed the hatches and had them rebuilt. Has anyone used Butyl tape to reinstall them? I am curious as to the method that works best and wont leak.

Thanks for your kind advice.

Hi David,
I installed several new Atkins & Hoyle hatches on my 33.
I used 3M 4000UV. I asked A & H and they indicated that was appropriate.

Install the hatch dry. Mask the deck and flange at the perimeter. Remove hatch. Apply bead of sealant. Screw hatch in place. Scrape off excess sealant. Remove masking tape from deck and flange.

Neat and leak-free.
