Painted Mast & Wishbone

The mast and wishbone are repainted for #27. Hardware install next weekend. Anything I should consider adding or changing? Does the choker chafe on the mast? I’ve seen soft winch pockets as protection from the block but I was thinking of the line itself. I also saw someone with chocks installed on the outside of the wishbone to hold the halyard in place when not sailing. I like that idea. Let me know your great ideas!

Paint job looks beautiful.

As for chafe issues, it depends a bit on the details of your set-up. In general, the horizontal part of the choker tackle running from an eye on one mast side through the forward boom end turning block and back to the mast choker turning block might chafe. Also, if you pull your boom tight against the mast, the plastic boom chafe guards may be a problem.

Most of the mast chafe from the choker comes from the floating choker block, rather than the lines. If by soft winch pocket you mean a plastic one, that’s one alternative as a cover for the block.

Another is to make a leather one. An easy design for that is to cut two leather pieces into a shape like this:

Make it big enough that the two pieces can be laced to each other without getting tight enough to interfere with the line. Punch holes along the sides to lash the two pieces together and one towards the top and bottom to lash the cover to the shackle and becket to keep it from riding up off the block.

FWIW, I also put strips of non-friction tape in places where this may be a problem (e.g., halyards coming out of the exit cutouts). I’ll check the brand the next time I’m on the boat and post it.

I’ve seen posts about putting what’s called a skene block on the boom to keep the halyard from slapping at the dock, e.g., Wishbone mystery hardware . That may be what you were thinking of. I don’t understand how to put it on the inside of the boom without it becoming a potential sail chafe source. I don’t understand how to put it on the outside without having to hassle with getting the halyard in and out of between the boom. So I’m not a fan. FWIW, I moused a shackle onto the top of one of my cabintop deck organizers, and clip my halyard to that at the dock. That leads away from both the mast and the boom.

All IMHO, FWIW.
