Sheave for NS30 main halyard

Does anybody have a source to replace a main halyard sheave on my NS30? I am looking to replace one of the two sheaves. It has a ball bearing center is 4" in diameter, 9/16" wide with a 5/8" bore.

Hard to know exactly what you want to replace without a pic.

I always go to garhauer first.

Traded e-mails with Mike Quill (what a tremendous resource) and included a picture. He reports that the sheave in question was a limited run that Murray Cressman contracted Garhauer to make. There website shows nothing equivalent. I’v attached a picture of what I have for sheaves. I won’t be doing anything more about this until the fall but if anybody knows the diameter of the balls that would be a big help

Maybe helpful to know exactly which mast sheave you are referring to? Top of mast, bottom of mast? Perhaps a photo of the placement would help too.

Bill,

In the past, GarhauerMarine’s been fairly responsive when I’ve contacted them directly:

Garhauer Marine Hardware

You might see if they have records on the production run, or would be willing to quote a replacement. They do custom work in addition to what they sell.

I looked at Sheaves at Rigrite.com, and they don’t appear to have an exact match, but you might look it over and see whether they have anything that could be modified into something that would find satisfactory.

Thank you for the picture. Next time please be specific of what you’re looking for. I’m still making an assumption but I believe the sheave is from the masthead truck for the halyard. here is where I would go:

Don green makes custom sheaves. He lives in deltaville Virginia and I’ve been to his workshop on several occasion’s. I’ve seen the sheaves that he makes. He has clear instructions. Make sure you measure the pin and not the bore of the hole as he states the bore will be widened.

Keep the group informed.

I’m curious. A couple of the posts have asked the original poster to clarify his statement that he wanted to…

My boat only has halyard sheaves at the top of the mast. So I thought there was only one thing that Bill could be asking for.

Are some of the boats configured differently? Is there something I’m not understanding?

BTW, I knew I’d seen a drawing of the sheave in question somewhere. I looked on www.Nonsuch.org on the MEMBERS tab for NONSUCH SHOP DRAWINGS and didn’t find it under the N30 set, so I thought I was mistaken. But I just went back and realized that the N26 set has them. It looks like this:

Personally, I wouldn’t want to use exactly this these days, because I don’t think anyone still uses wire-to-rope halyards anymore. And it’s unfortunate that the drawing doesn’t give the width of the sheave. (Since they give a 4" measurement for the diameter, someone could do the math to figure out the drawing scale and reverse-engineer the rest of the measurements from there.)

In any case, it does seem consistent with Bill’s description of his, so it sounds like the same sheave may have been used across models.

Nice to know about Custom Made Sheaves. They seem like a useful source for a number of other items as well. Thanks, Chris.

I ran out of time so this project will have to wait until the fall, I’ll continue using the sheave I’ve been using. My plan is to rebuild the existing sheave in the fall after the mast comes down.

I have used this company to make some custom sheaves for my boats. They do excellent work at a reasonable price. I think it is a very small company and you deal with the boss.
