# Teak Floor Grates

We have a 1983 Nonsuch 26 and have been wanting to put in teak floor grates for a while.
I found these shower mats on Amazon that fit in perfectly at a reasonable cost and thought some folks might be interested. I showed them to another 26 owner at our club and he immediately ordered a set!:

I haven’t checked to see if they are available on US amazon.
I will likely buy a 4th grate and custom fit it around the binnacle.

These look great, and price is very reasonable too. However, at that price, I’d wonder if really teak or more likely Acacia or Eucalyptus wood which are common teak looking substitutes. I have some “teak” patio furniture from Home Depot, but I’m pretty sure its Eucalyptus with a teak coloured finish on it. I mention this because the finish wasn’t holding up in damp spring weather, so I put a couple of coats of Cetol teak finish on the furniture. That was about five years ago and they still look good today. You may want to put on a marine finish on the grates now while they are still new, so they will continue to look good in the years to come. You may also want to check if the fasteners are stainless steel to prevent rust stains in your cockpit.

Teak. Is insanely expensive these days and there are lots of options. A friend who is a skilled wood worker and sailor swears by iroko which is a quarter the price of teak.

It doesn’t look like you got a response to your question about what size. I didn’t order them, but I did look it up on Amazon. It appears you’d want to order the Large size, which is 25.95" in its longest dimension. A Nonsuch 26 cockpit turns out to be 26" wide and 60" long. I made a different kind of grate for mine and remember the measurements.

Purpleheart is a great substitute for teak, particularly for wear areas like cockpit grates. It doesn’t take long for the purple to change to generic brown and with a little Cetol you would be hard pressed to tell it isn’t Teak.
