This brings down the value of our boats.

Sorry it’s deleted. It was a pretty nice looking 26 in Friday Harbor for $7500 USD.

I get that some of our… more experienced Nonsuch folk … have had their value out of the boat over the past 3-4 decades and getting market value for the boat won’t change their lives. But, it does drag down the real value of boats that others still consider a major investment.

Should you be one of those that just wants out of the boat scene and don’t need the return on investment… please, donate it to a local charity that handles boats. They are plentiful and will more than appreciate your generosity.

There are no negative points in the listing. I’m willing to bet the deck is rotten or there is a major issue with the mast and that’s why the boat is so cheap. “Reasonable offers considered” is a good clue that there is something major that is not right

There is a highly negative point in the listing: an electric motor. It will greatly limit the number of people willing to even consider the boat. Although people do say they would like an electric motor, most would rather not actually want to put up with its limitations if they have any ambitions w.r.t staying out of harbour for any length of time. 300 A Hr at 48 volts sounds like a lot (thinking of our house banks), but it won’t get you far. Figure about equivalent to 3 or 4 gallons of diesel at a guess?

It looks like a moot point. The ad was pulled.

Not many Nonsuchers with electric motors have sold their boats yet. I’ve been trying to monitor it, though.

The impression so far is that potential buyers put off by the electrics are balanced by those interested in electric motors who like having the installation already done for them.

So, it may not be as bad as feared.

The market for boats, especially boats of this vintage, is very soft. I can’t recall seeing many for sale on our site, for so long. Vessel condition and local/regional market demand could very well mean that the boat is priced correctly. Aside from all that, if the owner needs to sell it as a bargain for timing or personal reasons, someone will get a bargain but then that boat will be out of the pool of available boats and the market will still be the market.

I hope the owner will reconsider the sales strategy, since the low price combined with the impressive list of features is likely to make knowledgeable buyers concerned about hidden defects (note comments above).

That said, sales data on boat values is generally collected through brokers, so prices on the private market don’t have as big an impact.

BTW, a friend is just now completing the paperwork as the sale of his N36 goes through. It went for his asking price, and was on the market for only a few months.
