access for starter

Hi Group
I need your help. I am having an electrical problem and need to access the starter. How the heck do you squeeze yourself into a spot to access the starter.? I know some have had to change or rebuild but how do you get to it? It’s a westerbeke 27A …thanks for any and all help…Did anyone notice the number of Nonsuches on EBAY??? I count 4…thanks Mike Schiff TAYVA 407 N30U 87,Pultneyville NY

We had to get ours rebuilt a few years ago. I think access was from over the fuel tank and also from the cabin. I know when I reconnected a wire which had slipped off, I went from the cabin side.

I think that you will need to use a Saws-All to cut an access through the cockpit floor. Sorry

I never did have to access the starter on my Nonsuch but, I did need to get access to remove the manifold when I was pulling the engine for my electric conversion. Pulling off the heat exchanger should allow you much better access to the starter too.

Before beginning to remove the engine I will need to make room. The table needs to be removed and all the cushions removed in what could turn out to be a messy job …

It’s possible to cut an access panel in the bulkhead between the engine bay and the small hanging locker on the starboard side of the companionway steps. I think that later 30Us came with this access panel as standard, it also allows easier access to the raw water pump and the back of the alternator.

A. Please describe your electrical problem, Mike. Also, is this what your engine compartment looks like in the starboard cockpit locker?? You can see part of the starter somewhere in the middle by a blue/black hose.

Hi Joe
I wish I had that much room to see. The problem I am having is trying to start engine. Let me start at the beginning. I had the yard launch me on a Tuesday , I went down on Saturday and after doing the rigging I went into the marina and one of the workers asked how my engine was…never told me what the problem was…I went back to boat and turn the battery switch on and engine starts by it self…water is coming from the end caps on heat exchanger…turn off engine,go home order all new parts, parts come in and I go to work…access for the port side of exchanger is very limited so I loosen bolts and try and move heat exchanger as far as I can…far enough to get my fingers in and work blind…engine stills starts by it self…working with friends somehow get it not to start by itself…now it won’t start with starter switch…I can’t go on like this…thanks for any advice you can give Joe…Mike

The most likely problem is not at the starter. Right now, if you turn the key to the “ON” position do the gauges work? If so, when you turn to the “Crank” (start) position, does the voltage gauge needle drop??

Hi Joe
I will go down to boat today and report back…Thanks for your help…Mike

Hi Joe
Just got back from boat…Nasty day on south side of lake Ontario…well anyway when I turn key the battery indicator jumps up …when I suppress the buttons for glow plugs and starter …nothing…hope this shows something…thanks Mike

Mike I have just replaced my starter twice in one week a month ago . You are a small enough fit to squeeze down the starboard side to remove the 2 bolts. But have someone else to hand you tools etc and to pull you if you get stuck.

Do you have a “V” drive?? Anyway, on the engine, somewhere on the top is a relay with a reset button. Hit that button and then try again. If that doesn’t work, are you handy with and do you have a 12V test light??
