Bent mast?/ carbon boom

  • With all the tension off my mast. I even made a boom chalk which works great right we’re the masts are sleeved together? Are the bolts wallowed out?. Standing on the dock you can see it plane as day. The boat is sailing beautifully so I need some advice. I contacted the composite people for a price so here goes. 1/2 the weight supper strong the boom is 25,710.00 ready to go . If I need a new mast are they still available and who makes them am I looking at carbon? I can use some onsite. Jim moores Arawak NS33/41

Jim: If your provider or email client has the facility to put a signature at the end of your posts, you may want to give it a shot. Where does the boat live??

Nonsuch mast sources:

Klacko -bare aluminum about $35,000 USD plus freight.

Composite Engineering - two part painted carbon fiber more than $55,000 USD plus freight, electrical wiring and sail slides.

In my case the sail slides were Harken Batt slides - not cheap.

There is a huge amount of fabrication labor that you cannot imagine in the fabrication of the CF spar.

Either spar will have a lead time exceeding 16 weeks.

The carbon fiber spar requires a Spartite mast collar rather than wooden or plastic wedges. I had the lugs on the inside of the deck collar removed by machining. That was recommended to me by Mike Quill in order to better receive the Spartite collar.

All above is based on my mast replacement this past year. Fortunately for me, the original mast broke on the way to the boatyard for winter storage last fall.

A mast costing half the value of the boat has a lot of “ouch” factor to me. I remember that Bernard Moitessier use to use telephone poles on the boats he built. There was a metal flag pole fabricator near me and I always wanted to go visit and see if they could make a replacement Nonsuch mast should the need arise. Though I never have done it yet. One thing I worry about with Carbon fiber is it’s tendency to shatter if struck by lightning. I personally would stay with al aluminum for that reason.

I thought that someone in the past had a mast built by a light pole fabrication company.

That is where Klacko sources their masts.
