Check those old outlets

Finally getting around to replacing the final 3 AC outlets on Wireless. Obviously necessary given we have different shaped plugs down here in NZ.

The old one in the head was in pretty scary shape

The old one was completely corroded

New one in place

Glad you changed 'em, those look pretty bad. This is also a good reminder to all of us to check the shore power connection at regular intervals. Corrosion there can raise the resistance high enough to generate heat that can melt plastic and rubber and possibly even start a fire (as I learned when tracing the burning smell on a previous boat many years ago).

I’m not familiar with the arrangements on boats other than the 26, since that’s what I have. On mine, the outlet in the head has covered sockets to protect from water intrusion.

Can you tell whether the damage you observed was due to water/humidity coming from behind or in front of the fitting?

I’m going to guess that the corrosion is a result of decades of exposure to sea air, and from what I can tell, the plug is a standard household unit. It is possible that at some point in history there was a migrating deck leak in this location. The corrosion affected the galvanized steel parts. I’ve replaced it with one made almost entirely of plastic and copper.
