Hi, I would like to replace the two plywood hatch boards leading from the cockpit to the cabin on my NS30U. What have others done? Is there a source to buy new ones? Thanks, John

Hi John;
I took my old ones to a local plastic shop and had new ones made from the pattern from smoked plexiglass. MUCH brighter, and will never rot. Just be careful not to scratch…Handle carefully.
I have had them for 4 years, and they are still quite nice.
Cost around $250, with bevelled edges and an attached strip to keep water out from the partition between boards. Get them the same thickness as the originals, and they will give great security.
Also, being smoked, you can see out, but it is hard to see in. If you wish, at night you can hang a simple curtain across the opening to keep out all prying eyes. I strap them to the Starboard cockpit side with a shock cord when not in use.
Cheers,

Hi John,
I purchased 1/4 sheet (2’x4’) teak marine plywood from a supplier in Somerville, MA for about $50. I cut them to the same measurements as the originals, removed and reused the louvered vent and applied Sikkens Cetol Light for the finish after making sure they fit perfectly. The finish matches the teak trim on board. I am very happy with the results.
I also duplicated the upper board using 1/2" AC grade plywood and cut out a large opening for an insect screen. I painted this insect board off white to match the gelcoat in the cockpit. The screen panel provides light, ventilation and keeps the buggers out of the cabin.

These doors came with my N26C so I don’t know their origin. Perhaps original? They are quite convenient when opening and closing, and are easily removed by just lifting up. They also allow for circulation when closed.

To Bob Forman, I like your doors. Do you think there are from Cruising Concepts? John Ferrero
We have plexi or something like plexi, I think it is Lexan, Anyway, any shop that does plastic can make them, similar to motor bike windshields. We keep them in two "cases"made from white cotton towels and store them behind the settee cushions when no in use. The ones we replaces were in 4 sections the new ones are 2 sections. The join is a bevel and we have no water issues. We prefer 2 vs 4 sections, easier to handle and stow. The additional light in the cabin is great!
