Your question got me thinking and I found another picture that shows the davits bolted to the wood strip. So much for memory. It’s the pushpit base which is bolted through the plastic.
Lloyd: Not knowing where you live and how you use a bimini or dodger, it’s hard to comment. Here are some photos of mine. Having delivered and driven a lot of boats over the years, I’ve found this style to be the most useful and versatile.

Thanks for the new photo Jim. I thought it looked like your Davit frame was installed on top of the wood strip. Which brings up another question. I wonder do you know if that Davit frame base is just screwed into the wood strip or is actually bolted through with a backing plate underneath the deck? It looks like the push pit attachment point takes all of the horizontal stress and it might not be necessary for the base to be bolted through to a backing plate below deck. It would simplify installation if that were the case.

My impression is that the big installation issue to consider for davits is that they form a signficant lever arm that’s trying to pry all of its attachments simultaneously both upwards and backwards diagonally. Acting on that lever is the weight of the dinghy, which in the worst case scenario could have accidentally filled with sea or rain water. At 8 lbs / cubic foot, how much weight could that add to a dinghy? Even a person grabbing a davit as they fall off a ladder or a swimstep could turn out to be a serious load considering their distance from the fulcrum.
Personally, I’d be very nervous about whether our pushpit installations are designed to take those kinds of loads in those directions.
Will their fastenings and backings hold? Will the tubing bend? I don’t know, but if it were my boat, I’d want to be sure before deciding to go for a less than maximum strength installation.
