Great Lakes Bottom Paint

Hi All

I have VC 17 on my hull and it works well on the Great Lakes. There are few boats around that are using an off market brand from Minnesota that is similar but seems to be marginally less effective as well some use Interlux Racing Bronze which works well but builds up over time and would need sanding off. I am not sanding huls anymore, been there, done that and have all the tshirts.

There seems to be 3 similar products, Liquid Speed, SR21 and Sea Hawk SIlver. Has anyone used these products and to what success.

Cheers

Thor

Hello Thor,

I’ve used both VC 17 and for the past 6 years SR21.

The SR21 works just as well as VC 17 and is a little cheaper. Every year the bottom looks good when I have the boat pulled out of the lake.

Ken,

Can SR21 be applied directly over the previous layer of VC17?

Every year I get sticker shocked when I pick up a couple of quarts of VC17. This year the cost has jumped another $15 / qt. Our marina indicated that the Canadian list price is now at $93/ quart. Its all about the environmental contamination concerns with copper based paints; and being forced to change or pay to stay.

Hi Jack,

When I bought KISMET it had Micron on it. I cleaned the bottom and then put VC 17 on the bottom. My yard then suggested the S21 as it is pretty much the same thing. I wiped down the bottom with thinner and then applied the SR21 the next year with no problems.

Cheers,

Ken
