Looking for advice on step #2 of going electric: diesel "disposal"

Thanks all for the step #1 advice.

With a sad sigh in realizing that my health at 67 won’t let me do what Tom on Crackln Rose pulled off at 75, I’ve hired a guy I trust to do my engine removal. I’m still planning to do the new installation myself.

I expect to finalize my battery configuration decision and place my Electric Yacht QT10 engine and accessories order this week.

The local advice I’m getting is to make a video of my diesel engine running, and post it as part of a for sale ad on EBay and Craigslist for the stuff coming out of my boat.

Any advice on how to price it, folks? Major items are:

  • Westerbeke 18 diesel engine w/ approx. 2400 hours on it
  • Waterlift muffler
  • Aluminum fuel tank, 12 gal. (previous owners were racers obsessed w/ weight reduction who ditched the original larger tank)
    Thanks,

– Bob

Bob,
I went through this in 2020. Want to by a nice used Westerbeke 21A? No one is the St. Louis area does and I had dropped my price to $500. a video of it running might help, but you have to find someone willing to watch the video. We were not able to remove the fuel tank in one piece, as it turns out we could not remove it in two pieces either, four was the magic number. Your 12 gallon tank should be easier. The installation is a piece of cake. Choosing a place for the batteries is complicated, you will need to keep the weight aft so as to not screw up the balance. We ran three 2x6 boards thwarts ship and bolted them down to the existing stringers. Eight Lifeline 6V AGMS are strapped to the 2x6’s and the motor was connected to the original drive shaft location. I am thrilled with the outcome. The hardest part for us was based on our decision to run the throttle and gauge wiring inside the pedestal. We ran them inside 1/4" PEX. It is doable and makes for a nicer installation, but it took two people an entire day to accomplish that. Let me know if you have any questions

Great pictures – very helpful!

How did you end up disposing of the engine, Tim?

Thanks,

It is sitting inside the boatyard storage shed right now waiting for a nibble.

Be advised, Tim, that a lot of the external parts on that engine fit all the way up to a W-13.
