Mast up or Mast down?

Good Day All:

Unfortunately here in Ontario, Canada it's getting closer to having to
be hauled out for the winter. Yuck!! For the previous 3 years that
I've had my 30C I've removed my mast. At the marina where I'm
presently located there are two other Nonsuches, (30c and 33), and I
noticed last year that they both left their masts up for the winter.
In fact one left their boom rigged as well. I have been under the
impression that leaving the mast stepped puts a lot of pressure on the
deck especially during high winds. I would appreciate any input about
leaving the mast up or taking it down for the winter. It sure would
save time and money if it was left up.

Thanks

You should be able to find a lot of information in the archives on this subject but I think the consensus would be that you should not leave the boat on the hard with the mast/boom up. The main problem with doing so is that, unlike boat with stayed masts, you cannot effectively immobilize a Nonsuch mast. So the movement of the mast, which is dampened by the water when the boat is afloat, has to be fully absorbed by the hull when the boat is on a cradle or jackstands on the hard. That being said, we did store with the mast up (boom down) for several years when we first had our Nonsuch, without noting any obvious problems.

Helo All,
I have taken my mast down every year since new in 1986 and consider
it well worth the effort and will continue to do so. Less strain on the
hull, but perhaps more important, a safety check of everything and a good
clean of the mast/track.
Actually the mast is from about 1988 or so as a fire in the yard in
the winter led to the insurance company buying a new mast, less deductable.
If the mast had been in the boat, it would not have been burned!
