offset prop shaft

Hi

My NS 30C has the shaft offset to port to make the shaft removable without dropping the rudder BUT.

With a right hand rotation from the transmission which “pushes” the stern to starboard when in forward gear

and causes the stern to move to port when in reverse. The problem of prop walk as above is amplified by the

fact that with a shaft angle DOWN of 12* or so, in forward gear the rising port side of the prop does less

work than the starboard side blade. That is, the right side has an effective increase in blade pitch. Add this to the

fact that the rudder is in the prop wash and one does not find the prop walk in forward to be a issue.

This is particularly troublesome with a MaxProp because the blades have no twist, i.e. they are flat.

The factory should have offset the shaft to starboard to counter act the prop walk.

Dave Gerr, the prop man has written to this effect AFTER publication of his seminal book on props.

A local friend of mine (since deceased) purchased his NS 26 at the same time as mine and never had an

issue with prop walk. Imagine the surprise when the shaft offsets were found to be opposite on the two boats.

Both boats were straight drives no “V” drives. Perhaps Mike Quill can explain factory practice.
