Portlight construction and replacing gasket questions

The portlights and associated trim rings each have 4 screws–how are they attached to the cabin sides (e.g., just screwed into fiberglass?) and are they (portlight and trim ring) attached to each other? I believe the trim ring can be removed without removing the portlight. Can the portlight be removed without also removing the trim ring?

I need to replace the gasket on a few of my portlights. (I already have the materials and adhesive on hand.) For folks that have done this before, have you done it with the portlights in place? Which essentially requires you to work on the gasket upside down. Or have you removed the portlight so you can work right side up replacing the gasket?

Seems like cleaning out the groove and gluing in the new gasket material would be much easier with the portlight out, but I don’t know how much of a pain it is to remove the portlight.

If you have Atkins & Hoyle port lights you can remove the hinge pivot bolts to separate the two parts.

Hi Ward,

Yes, I have A&H port lights. Thanks for the tip, I’ll investigate what’s involved. I had been under the impression that separating the two pieces was challenging and the most difficult of all the options (e.g., removing the port light, working upside down,…).

On the Atkins & Hoyle website, parts department, port hinge screw advises against removal unless necessary but then provides guidance on removal given that locktite was used in the manufacture.

Bought this off Amazon along with the appropriate adhesive. Fits and works perfect..cheers, Gary

This is the adhesive. I scraped the old out and cleaned the track with lacquer thinner. Let dry, precut gasket material and made the seam at the top of the porthole to avoid any voids at the bottom where water might seep through.

Many thanks Gary, I appreciate the information.

Apply some adhesive to the butt ends of the gasket. This helps to waterproof that joint.
