Westerbeke 21 - NS26C

Dear Nonsuchers,

I am searching for a W21 part but before the eastern Canada Westerbeke dealer will order he wants to know the serial number of the engine. Needless to say I can’t find it!

I would appreciate advice where the serial number might be on the engine - and is it stamped or a physical plate?

Here’s the rest of the story.

I’m looking to replace Item 14 on the parts list below - the air intake/silencer. What I inherited with the boat obviously got overheated at some stage and does not fit well. Problem is according to the WS agent - Part 14 is no longer made. Apparently it has been replaced by the item in the top left hand corner of the first attachment, Item 43 (together with Item 49 or 51). But before ordering they need the engine serial number hence my question.

Has anyone in the nonsuch-universe actually made this substitution?

Anyone know of a tractor part that will fit (I follow that ongoing discussion with great interest)?

Appreciate the ongoing help and support of this group. Wonderful resource to newbies like us.

Cheers, Neil

Should be on the Westerbeke plate on top of the manifold - at least it is on my W13

Thanks Val for the very quick response.

I’m on the boat and went to look - I took the attached photo and it looks like that plate is missing.

Any other suggestions out there?

Hi Neil, I found my plate lying under the engine. It had also fallen off.

Mine fell off to, but the previous owner manage to keep it. I didn’t even know the serial # was on there so thanks for the info.
Does anybody know of a reliable Westerbeke parts distributor in the US? I think I’m in need of a hot water exchange unit as I think mine is leaking coolant into the salt water.

If you mean a heat exchanger, I bought one last year from Mr. Cool, Google it. I believe they have a warehouse close to you in Bellingham, WA.

Don: The photo you attached is not a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is round.

Yes Joe, you are correct, that was not my photo, but came from Neil the originator of this thread. Don’t know how it got attached to my post.

Nonetheless, I bought a new heat exchanger from Mr. Cool, online. Here’s a photo, and a shot of the old one that was nearly plugged at raw water intake, but engine never overheated. I replaced it because it seemed to have some pinholes near end plate. Probably from previous owner not checking and replacing zinc often enough?

I guess it’s good to replace them, Don. However, a good radiator shop can rodd out an exchanger and check for pinholes. I do remember replacing mine due to too much external corrosion.

In a recent message from Don Crossley, he attached a photo of the heat exchanger on the Westerbeke in his NS26. I note there is an electrical cable connected to the zinc anode which I’m assuming leads to the common grounding point on the engine block. Nonsuch Luck doesn’t have a grounding wire connected from the heat exchanger anode to the engine block of its Westerbeke 27A. Should it or is electrical continuity with the anode achieved some other way? I have re-attached Don’s photo here.

Bob,
My boat is also a 30U, #369. Engine was replaced in 2004 by previous owner, its a Westerbeke 35D-3. The old heat exchanger did not have the wire. The new one has a stud near the zinc. I connected wire to the stud and just attached in to a near by bolt on the engine.
