There we were making our way to gibsons this morning on route to the round Bowen race on Saturday. Coming up to welcome pass near secret cove we spot a couple boats heading in the other direction. Hey, the one boat has a wishbone… hey! They both do!! Enthusiastic waves were exchanged as 3 nonsuch 26’s passed within a couple hundred feet of each other. Not sure where the other boats were from but one was sail #50.

If I’m not mistaken NS26 #50 would be Respite and if so an extremely good guess as to the other would be Mariner’s Cat.

The round Bowen Race was my second. Did we have fun, the race turned into a three day event and I got to meet Ron of Allegro fame. He has been in this race for 25 years so we picked his brains. Secrets I don’t think he would have shared with anyone else. I managed to steer clear of trouble at the start but kept painting myself into corners. It wasn’t to disappointing when we didn’t cross the line in time to be a finisher because we were in good company, only 11 of the 117 entrants Finished.
Unknowingly Mike and crew experienced several rare events. A north start. In my couple decades of doing this race this is second time we’ve gone north and counter clockwise around the island. The last time for me was aboard my express 27, fresh out of the shop after a major rebuild. A squall came through the fleet and knocked out many boats, including Thumper, my express. This year the number of non finishers is also unheard of. Usually there are a few, sometimes a couple dozen… but 90% of the fleet. Wow! It was still a great weekend away and allegro is back in Pender Harbour safe and sound.
