I spend plenty of time obsessing about boat maintenance and technology. It takes a day like yesterday to understand why. A day on the water to remember.
Yesterday ( in spite of a light air forecast ) Linda and I headed out on Soave for a daysail.
Once out of the channel we enjoyed steady SSE 12-16 knot breeze. The kind of breeze that make the 9 NM from CT coast to Long Island seem shorter.
While close hauled( maybe pinching a bit ) we sailed around Cockenoe Reef at about 5.3 knots. Looking to the east we saw the CPYC RC1 drop the postpone flag and start the sequence for the Atlantic Fleet. CPYC runs two racing circles, to our west we could see the small boats setting up. Plenty of boats on the water.
We short tacked a couple times to stay clear of the boats in sequence. At Georges Rock G1 we cracked off to a close reach and headed to the 4-stacks near Eatons Neck. The next 1.5 hours Soave hummed along at 6+ knots. As a bonus we sailed through Round the Sound Racers nearing the end of the Sound Run Portion of the race… spinnakers flying.
Having 5 PM dinner plans ( dinners at the club are 3-4 hour affairs ) , we turned back about 2:30 to head back. This time it was a broad reach back to G1 and a dead run after we cleared the reef. All in conditions our Nonsuch boats were made for. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Once back, we enjoyed a feast of corn on the cob, chicken, lamb, steak and a plethora of salads with our boating friends.

We’re looking forward to our sail to Greenport for the INA Rendezvous. Hoping for favorable weather like yesterday.
