I have recently acquired these davits but am reluctant to mount them as they are configured for deck mounting and I feel they may be attractive “Gybe Bait” Changing out the deck mounts for transom mounts would be rather expensive. The mounts are 340 USD each. Has anyone used these davits in the deck mounted configuration and if so were they problematic? Thanks

Brian,
My davits (Nonsuch 33) mount on the deck and attach to the aft side of the stern rail. There are cleats on the top of the davits that can catch the sheet during a jib. The davits themselves are not an issue.
Thanks for your reply. So would the davits just bolt on to the deck on a reinforced pad. Not sure what you would mean when saying that they are attached to the aft side of the stern rail. Do you perhaps have a photo. I appreciate your assistance. Cheers, brian
No Photos of davits.
Thanks
Hello Brian, we also have the Atkins & Hoyle davits and they are mounted on the stern deck. There is significant reinforcement below for them. I am afraid we cannot get to the boat right now for pictures.
The system has worked well and we see no evidence of any structural problems, above or below. I have also not had any problems with the sheet catching on the davits. In addition to our dinghy we carry a large solar panel on them. I guess the downside is that we are a bit stern heavy!

Thanks very much for the input. I do like the idea of being able to mount the solar panel across the davits. What do you use to secure the panel. Thanks
Hello Brian, here are two pictures which show the setup. The panel is mounted in clamps which allow the panel to be tilted to face the sun. As I recall below deck the reinforcement includes a fibreglassed plywood brace which goes down the transom. It seems to handle the load and looks well done by the previous owner.
Sorry the photos are not better, they are just what I was able to find.

Thanks very much Peter. It looks like your Davits are pretty much the same as the ones I acquired. It’s encouraging to know that I can use these Davits as they are configured rather than having to purchase new mounts to get on the transom. I see you are 366 I am 344.Cheers, Brian
Brian, I just bought my boat a few months back my Davis were bolted to my back deck had plates and big washers. When I scanned for saturation my meter went off the charts I could move them even they were bolted and plated so I removed them. We dried the core out and has Tempary plugs in the bolt holes. The transom is solid glass puts them feather aft and if you look at google photos and put Nonsuch you can find ones installed that way. I plan to reinstall mine that way. Good luck Jim

Thanks for the info.
Hi Brian, we have the same Atkins & Hoyle davits and they are transom mounted. The backing plate on each arm is an epoxy coated 24" X 24" piece of 3/4" plywood Bondo’d into place. Each arm is secured back to the deck by two lengths (in a vee pattern) of aircraft cable. This effectively arrests the lever action of the davit arms regardless of the angle of heel.
I can attest that this works well even in extreme conditions and we carry a dinghy with a 75 lb motor on it.
Another Nonsuch in the marina had their davits deck mounted and their deck cracked under the load when they were caught in some rough weather.
