Autohelm upgrade?

From the article I found on this subject (link below), I will be experimenting with this on Friday.

Dan: I believe you are describing a model 4000 where the belt is hidden in the part attached to the wheel. A 3000 has a drive motor located below the wheel with a visible belt.

What part doesn’t work, Jean?? I may have some spare parts for it.

Jo, It’s the Box totally

Tks

Yes, it is the 4000, I found an article about how to adjust some of the settings for better performance. Will be back on my boat tomorrow and check it out. The adjustments are supposed to be in the menus, we’ll see.

Already do that and nothing happened, the box seems dead

On EBay
 I will look :eyes:
Thanks :folded_hands:

Yes, I have downloaded the manual, lots of valuable information, thanks!

Dan - I would inquire with other users of the new version of the wheel pilot before you commit. I tried everything on my old ST4000 before I took the plunge with the undermount system. 1) The performance of the undermount RM EV-Sail is astounding and 2) I do not miss the noise and chatter of the wheel pilot. 3) I was able to install mine on my own, so labor was free. Half off does make a difference.

Bob, How did you get half off with the under deck mounted autopilot system? My electronics guy gave Mr an estimate of about $7500.
Thanks,
Dan

The unit costs $3500. My labor was free!

Where did you purchase it?

Hodges Marine.

If you wait, Raymarine will have a promotional rebate soon for additional discounts.

Hi Bill,

I am considering purchasing the EV100. Did you install the unit yourself? Curious of the level of difficulty.

Gary,
My 1989 N33 came with an original Autohelm autopilot, think it may have been the 4000 model. When it worked it was good and certainly better than any wheel pilot such as the ones I had my previous N30. However the Autohelm began showing its age exhibiting slow to respond issues and hard-over commands for no apparent reasons. The controller buttons were tired, hard to activate and also had a hard to read display. As I was converting much of my on board electronics to take advantage of NEMA 2000 I decided to replace the old Autohelm with the latest Raymarine replacement which also feature NEMA 2000. Overall it was an easy job, almost one for one replacement which I was able to accomplish myself. Only issue which caught us (Raymarine guys and myself) was type 2 linear drive motor. My old one was a type 2 yet Raymarine advised that all I needed was a type 1 given to displacement of my N33.
Well we soon discovered that because of the geometry of the original type 2 mounting I needed another type 2, which was more expensive than the type 1. I paid up and the replacement was easy and it works very well.
I don’t doubt that there may be other ways of installing but in my case I didn’t want any challenges or reconfiguration, only easy, one for one replacement.
Pix also available if you like.

Hi Gary,
NS33 might be too big a boat (or at least in the two areas that matter most to the autopilot: too big in rudder and sail area). You might need the EV200. Bob Gehrman did a very good write-up on his experience with installing one on an NS30. It will be different on the 33, but I still think it’s a good guide. You can find it here in the Members area: https://nonsuch.org/resources/Documents/Member%20projects/RM%20EV%20200%20Sail%20NS%2030%20Install.pdf
I keep dancing around the idea of replacing my ST4000 and that’s probably the way I’ll go when I do.

Hi Gary,

I did do the install myself. The instructions were not real clear mostly because I knew nothing about sea talk but the install was pretty easy. I put the EV1 and the control unit in the aft port side cupboard because that’s where the power to the old unit went. I took the power connector out of the old box and used that for the motor drive wires. I installed the display on the forward, starboard cockpit bulkhead where there was a defunct knot meter. That location is somewhat of a pain because it can’t be reached from the helm station but there is a remote available that I think I will treat myself to come springtime. Putting the display on the port side would have made for a lot less work running the wire for the display across the boat.

Thank you Ed,

A pic would be helpful. I think I have the old 4000 as well. Not sure about the type of linear drive motor.

Gary

Thank you Brian,
In speaking with the representative at the GPS store, he felt the EV200 would be over kill. The max displacement for the EV100 is 16,500, we’re at 13,500. The price differential is a lot

$1500 vs $3500. I’ll check out the guide. Thanks again,

If your under deck linear drive unit is operational, it will work with a new Raymarine autopilot control system. On my N33, the original under deck drive is labeled Autohelm (Raymarine bought the Autohelm brand). It is a type 1 drive and I believe it is identical to current Raymarine labeled type 1 drives.
