Battery Straps - another things to periodically check

Surprise ! While replacing Soave’s battery bank this weekend I discovered one of the battery strap buckles was damaged… not sure if it’s from heat, abrasion, or chemical.

Something to add to the annual check-me list. This buckle wasn’t holding anything in place.

I find the straps are often broken or loose. Instead I have made battery boxes out of plywood and epoxy matting that closedly fit the battery . I then use a closed cell foam piece across the top of the battery and the lid is secuted with bolts and a cross brace of metal.

I place some web material around the base of the battery and up the sides to make batteryremoval easier.

Thor,
Better restraint for the batteries is a good idea. We ran into some rough seas on the way back from the Rendezvous that have caused me to rethink how stuff is secured.

Several boats that I spoke with at the Rendezvous, were tested by conditions beyond what they generally experience.

Good to be ready whatever comes your way.

Thanks,
Rob…

I’m with Thor on this one. I fabricated a fiberglass reinforced ( painted) plywood box that’s secured on all sides with screws for the start battery. The box is screwed down to a glass reinforced based next to the engine just after of main cabin. House batteries are under the stbd setter and secured to glasses ply wood base. New Victron batteries has an offset clip that fits into base of battery and then secured into base.

Ventilation hole for cables and air along with a plywood spacer that’s removed when I need to remove the battery. Made it 5/6 yrs ago and it’s held perfectly . No straps.
