Boom Brakes

Line snubbers are one of those products that all look pretty much the same, so one is tempted just to go with the least expensive, or most readily available. However, I’ve used a couple of different brands for various purposes over the years and found that there is a great difference in quality, i.e. durability. The best I’ve found by far, and they can be hard to find, are the “Falcon” “Forsheda” snubbers, marketed by the same “Falcon” company that sells a lot of air horn cannisters.

I use them permanently on dock lines and to tie down the boom in port or when motoring. They are very expensive in initial price, but well worth it due to their quality.

So the 5/8" would be appropriate for a 26?

Hi Tim -

I would imagine that it would depend on what thickness your mainsheet is. Is that not in your guidebook that (hopefully) came with the boat ?

Ernie A. in Torornto

Guidebook? There’s guidebook? No, I did not get one with the boat. I believe that after 31 years any guidebook has been misplaced. I did find a “running Rigging list through the board somewhere and it says that the mainsheet should be 70’ of 7/16” dacron. since there does not seem to be a 1/2" snubber I would think that the 5/8" would be better than the 3/8".

Oh well …my boat is about the same age and it has a guidebook !!

But that’s OK cuz we can all find all of this info “on the board”.

Guidebook . . . Guidebook . . . there’s a guidebook? No sadly after 31 years the guidebook that came with new Nonsuch boats has gone missing. I did find on this board somewhere a chart of Running Rigging lengths and sizes, it says that for a 26 the mainsheet is 70’ of 7/16" Dacron. I doubt that I could thread 7/16" line through a 3/8" snubber, there is no 1/2" snubber so I guess that only leave the 5/8" snubber. Any thoughts?

Herewith a negative review on Amazon for the #2 Falcon.

brought this snubber in may 2013 by july of 20013 it stretched out, stayed that way than broke. I still have dockmate brand snubbers of same size 2 years now, and show no signs of wear. Don’t buy this snubber it’s JUNK!!! Falcon Safety No. 2 Line Master

One would think that, if dissatisfied, Dick would have returned a product that has a 5 year warranty.

How would this snubber attach to the mainsheet on a 26?

Easily. I now have one on the mainsheet of my 30C and really like it. If your mainsheet set up is the same, just untie the fixed end and thread it through the snubber.

I just installed one on my 30U the other day, Had to start with the bitter end as the other end had an eye splice in it. Works wonderful!

Joe,

Could you please post a photo of your setup? Or attach one to your email?

I am most curious of this approach.

I assume this is to mitigate the gybe?

For the mainsheet snubber on La Reina Nesta made a sleeve out of Sunbrella so the black rubber did
not mark the gel coat. Without the sleeve the snubbers I bought degraded fairly quickly in the not so intense
Vancouver sun and the slightly more intense air pollution.

The snubber did take some of the thump out of tacks as well as providing some protection for the blocks during gybes.

I moved the mainsheet standing block from the top of the stern light to rear deck similar to the setup on the 30's. With the block on the rear deck the snubber would occasionally catch on the stern light fitting. I have not been able to decide if the snubber contributes to twisting of the mainsheet so I go through phases with and without the snubber.

Joe,

Curious about that white line, with attached block, running from pad eye to pad eye, across the aft end just forward of the mainsheet block. What is its function?

Joe -

Regarding this line that Bob Dryer mentions …I believe that you once mentioned that you’d installed a “main sheet traveler” for racing (I think). If so, why ?? What is the advantage of a traveler that cannot be set at a specific position ?

Thanks,

Ernie A. in Toronto

If, where your sheet is connected to the deck, is not adjustable, it can’t be moved laterally to pull the wishbone down as opposed to pulling it sideways. It works particularly well in any kind of swell where the wishbone keeps bobbing up and down. This idea was discussed years ago by someone else on the list. I have a quick release pin to go from the original setup to a traveler in seconds.
