Boom pad eyes

Hello everyone,

I purchased my first yacht this year, a nonsuch Ultra 30 ‘Merlin of Mersea’.
I am slowly working my way through some minor issues highlighted in the survey but of course I am finding other issues on that journey. Being new to the group I thought I would start off with an easy question.

The mainsheet pad eye is clearly the original 30 year old item and has considerable wear on it (see photo attached). I would like to replace it.

Does anyone know what its design specifications were as in load bearing capacity or stainless steel grade?
Likewise, is there anywhere that is making and selling these items now?

If I cannot get a new one ‘off the shelf’, I guess the options are rebuilding it up through stainless steel welding or having a new one made via CNC machining. Is there another option?

I look forward to your help on this one.

Hi Sean,
Garhauermarine.com in California can make it for you at very reasonable cost if it is not currently stock.

Suncor make them. But any welding shop can make one of 316 stainless .

Welcome to the family, Sean - if a Nonsuch 30 Ultra is your first yacht… you went BIG and you did not go home, so to speak. How cool is that !

You have purchased a wonderful little ship and one of the very few in the UK or Europe. You may have noticed a mention of Mike Quill. He runs a rigging shop very close to where these boats were originally constructed, in St. Catherines, Ontario, about an hour and a half south of Toronto.

Mike used to work for Hinterhoeller who built our boats and is the absolute go-to guy for all manner of unique hardware, etc. he knows these vessels inside out. He will answer questions, etc. and is good to deal with. You may also notice that we Nonsuchers (and many sailors of other boats) spend lots of money at Garhauer Marine in California. If you don’t want to mortgage your home in order to buy blocks, pulleys, etc. from Harken, etc., talk to the good folks at Garhauer. They’ll custom make stuff and provide lots of bits and pieces to refurbish older blocks, etc.

They, like Mike Quill, are excellent. If you are not a member of our association, the International Nonsuch Association, I suggest that you join. It would be a good investment.

A boat is a wonderful escape from lockdowns and this damn pandemic.

Thanks Ernie,
I had crewed Merlin previously and really like the style, space and simplicity of the design. Luckily he came on the market at the right time for me and has kept me sane during lockdown

Thanks for the background information on suppliers too.

Sean,

Is that Burnham on Sea? (I learned to sail in Weston Bay).
