Choker Line Size

I need to replace the choker line on Catspaw. Looking at the specs in my owner’s manual, it calls for 9’ 6" of 3/16 line. This is the upper section of line, not the tackle line that runs to the cockpit. I’m questioning the 3/16" size because what’s up there now appears to be about 1/2" (haven’t climbed up to measure it yet). Can anyone offer a recommendation on this? Thanks.

Gary, I would go for low stretch 3/16" recommended in the specs. I can believe that you have 1/2’’ I think that is what I have too, but I have not replaced it yet. It was more important to replace all the oversized pennants and the 1/2" halliard. I have no regrets in replacing all the oversized lines as they were a major source of friction. It seems that there was a period that Nonsuchers thought bigger is better.

Hi Gary,

I would be interested in seeing your spec sheet.
I have included mine (attached).
Your 30U is younger than mine, and may reflect more refined decisions.

As you can see my specs say a shorter length of thicker rope, namely :
Wishbone Choker 7/16” Dacron Braid 7’9” …

If I were replacing my choker, I would hope to use Amsteel (dyneema)
because of its strength and low friction, but might have to consider
using a different knot than a bowline.
Such a advanced rope could be much narrower than Dacron.

Hi Gary

I can assure you that it is a typo. It should read 7/16. The length is good.

Thanks to all for the good advice. I think I agree the 3/16 must be a typo. Back in 1986 the hi-tech lines just weren’t available so that would have been way too small of line. I believe I’m going to try Amsteel braid in 1/4". It’s strong as steel and easily spliced (even I can do it). Will let you all know how it works out.

Thanks for the spec sheet, Jon. I’ll try to scan mine for you. Have to retrieve it from the boat first though.

The spec sheet for the 26 calls for 7/16" dacron braid 9’6" long and the choker tackle 5/16" X 36’ . One should be able to reduce rope size with modern materials to reduce friction.

Jon, attached is a scan of the line spec sheet from my owner’s manual. Again, this is for a 1986 30 Ultra. I noticed a few differences between this and your sheet. Interesting. Thanks again for your help.
