Wishbone hanger shackle size

Hello, I just installed the mast hanger and shackle this season. The wishbone was hanged by a pair of rope and pulley system before .

As you can see, the shackle we installed was small and one of the Nonsuch owner commented that the shackle should be bigger

I checked the Nonsuch manual and nowhere says anything about the shackle size.

Is there something I should be concerned about?

My boat is all rigged and ready to sail now …

Hi,
I’m not a rigger, the hanger shackle on Soave (NS33) is 3/8" ( 10 MM). Looks like yours is 1/4" or 5/16".

I’d look at the load rating of the various sizes and decide if yours is strong enough.

The safe bet is to poll other NS30’s for the size they are using and use the same.

Smooth Sailing…

I’m not a rigger either, but I think the you should use a shackle with load rating that is similar to that of the hanger wire cables you installed. And use a good quality stainless steel marine shackle.

And, I would also, if you haven’t already, attach the split ring on the shackle such that it is also through the shackle loop thus preventing the pin from working loose. Usually that is easier done with monel wire. Then wrap the shackle and nico press fitting (especially at the bottom end of the hanger) in rigging tape so that any sharp edges don’t slice the sail.
