Composting Head from Julie & Lloyd

Thank you for the article!

So basically if it’s a body of water that’s big enough to sail in, your few ounces or milliliters of urine aren’t going to harm anyone or the environment.

What pollutes our sailing water is failed sewage systems, failed septic tanks, storm water runoff, excess fertilizer runoff, pig farms, etc., etc., not recycled beer from sailors.

30 minutes to rip out the old Jabsco with all the plumbing and the original holding tank.
30 minutes to fill the old holes with 5 min epoxy and clean up the area.
2 hours to mount the new head, modify and run the vent hose, and wire the vent fan. Lots of wasted time deciding where to run the hose but finally just used the existing holes on the bulkhead and up to the old waste pumpout hole in the deck which will get a mushroom vent. Added benefit here is the hose is almost completely hidden.

So far we are very happy. Yes the old system stank a little all the time and this one is, so far, completely smell free after 3 days use. Very surprising.
There are a few other benefits and so far only one issue which we hope the guy who sold it to use has a fix for.
I didn’t buy the AirHead because they were out of stock and could not say when they would get more units and Natures head was only a little larger. It fits OK. Looks rather large but there is plenty of room infront and on both sides. Wife is 5’3" and can use it no problem, in fact she can now see out the window for the first time in 13 years! Bonus.

The seat height in our “easy-rise” toilet at home is 17.5 inches. How high is the seat with the Air-head?

Just a thought…
If your wife can look out the window…Does that mean that outsiders can look in?
Just wondering.

The platform the head sits on in the 26 is 5 inches high plus the Natures Head at 20 inches makes 25 inches total.
The old Jabsco from the floor to seat was 16.8 inches (which includes that 5 inch platform).

I thought about a mushroom vent replacing the existing pump out deck fitting but was concerned about water intrusion and something else to stub my toe on. I just ran PVC back to the aft lazerette and up to the existing air vent.
Bought a box of 12 bricks at Home Hardware for $4 ea.

I have been around a while back in the early 70s I lived with a Clives Multrom or how ever you spell it a composting head in a house in Maine it’s was ok as long as there weren’t too many people using it .when it didn’t and the smell well . The house were I was renting the land didn’t perk that was the only way they could build. We had to set rules and even then Sometimes it got overwhelmed . I had different boat And had plastic tanks so to solve the problem we constructed holding tanks using fiberglass and epoxy used pvc the gray pipe and hose for joints it more than solved the problem. I would love to hear about how well it works after the summer. Maybe Clives has grown up? Jim Moores Arawak N33- 41# Beaufort Nc

Does this PVC pipe run through the old holding tank compartment?
My boat does not have vents on the coaming. One of the items on my to-do list was to get them out of the way from the aft deck where we climb up and down to the swim platform.

So far the 3D printed mushroom vent is working well, no rain gets in. It’s about 3cm above the deck so dipping the starboard rail into the water or taking a green wave over the bow might have some water go down the vent hose. I’ll add a third vent to the to-do list when adding coaming vents.

Sorry I don’t know what the 12 bricks would be from Home Hardware. Until a few years ago you could buy 12 Bricks from the beer store at $3 each but they changed their name to Waterloo brewery now.

Yes it runs all the way back to the lazarette. I did not glue the pipe sections but used self tapping screws in case I needed to remove it for some reason. I did put a second bulk head fwrd of the old holding tank as there are some electrical and plumbing fixtures there and did not want to break any wine bottles in the new wine locker. Electrical I can live with out wine not so much.

There are two clam shell vents one on each side of the coaming. One is for the bilge blower and the other engine air intake. The pipe runs up to the engine intake clam vent. I don’t think you’d need a dedicated clam vent aft for the head. I put mosquito screens in place as that was a source of those pesky things.

Coir bricks, unfortunately is all Home Hardware sells  But Corona beer is still on sale…
