Coolant leaks

Hi friends, it’s been a little while since I’ve been able to spend time here or with the Nonsuch unfortunately. Hope everyone is hanging in there.

I’ve recently noticed a coolant leak from what appears to be two different places:

  1. The thermostat housing,
  2. And seemingly from the fresh water pump itself.

The photos here aren’t the best, but hopefully folks can make them out:

If indeed those are my leaks I’m wondering if they both need replaced or if gaskets/seals are enough?

I found the thermostat gaskets here. I believe it’s the same above and below the spacer.

For the coolant pump I know people have recommended a tractor supply company that carries the K3D circulation pump but I’m coming up empty in my searches, aside from some overseas sellers on eBay that I would rather avoid the shipping complications. I found an OEM pump for $300 so might just bite the bullet if it’s quickest and the best chance of fixing this leak.

Lastly, is replacing the pump and gaskets relatively straight forward? I’ve drained my coolant before and most of the bolts seem to be in decent condition so I’m hoping just unbolting it, putting in new gaskets/pump and then tightening everything up and refilling the coolant.

Many thanks!

Hi Matt,

for the fresh-water circulation pump, I did this project in March of 2019 on my 30 Ultra with a 27A Westerbeke.
It was surprisingly straight forward. I pre-lubricated all of the bolts as best as possible - used PB Blaster about a week prior to removal - after application of the penetrant, tap the bolts - then again a few days prior to removal, again tapping the bolts. The bolts came out using a standard socket set, with very little effort, after 32 years of being mounted, with no problem. I socked the bolts in apple-cider vinegar overnight and they looked almost new after that.

I bought my pump from Southern Global Tractor Supply in Mississippi USA. Identical replacement part, but without the pretty red Westerbeke paint. I used automotive high-temperature undercoat and then Ford Red High-temp engine paint… a very close match.

Including shipping the total cost was around $95 US… Southern Global was very responsive to some questions I asked them as well.
their website is:

If have photos of some of the process, so if you need additional images I would be happy to post.

Not sure how many hours you have on the engine but the pump shaft seems to be leaking , at least from the picture of the underside. When it starts it is just the occasional drip… but it gets worse over time. You might want to check when the engine is running and see of you can detect a leak.

A rebuild is around $100 a new pump 5 times that. Removing it is easy, and replacing all the gaskets easy as well. That by pass hose is a pain to install. The thermostat assembly uses cap screws and they need to be cleaned and the threaded holes carefully cleaned out prior to re install. Anti seize is your friend:)

Thanks Peter and Thor. I will follow these steps. I also went ahead and ordered the pump from southern global, but I hope it’s the right one for a W21.

This is the one they referred me to since I said it was based on the K3D engine (are both the W21 and W27 based on K3D?). I just noticed that Westerbeke lists 3 different pumps on their parts W21 list and I haven’t yet tracked down which pumps are used where.

Here is the pump their referred me to, hopefully it’s the right one:

I’d also love to check out some photos if you have them, you can email them to me directly if you prefer.

Hi Matt,

The 409302 pump is the pump I bought for my W27A. It was an exact replacement.
The original Westerbeke # is 30591. #8-2 on the Westerbeke page with the diagram (it is very confusing for them to list 3 different part numbers with no differences noted).
I looked at my ‘parts list’ from Westerbeke and it appears that the same pump is used for the W18 - W21 - and W27… so you should be good with the part you ordered.

I will try to make a link to some photos in the next day or two.

My research shows that the W13 pump original number is 30379, W18-21-27 is 30579 and 30473 for a W33. In addition, the only engine that uses the 30377 adapter is the W13.

Hi Matt,

I put the photos of the fresh water pump replacement process into my dropbox. This is the link to the photos:

Please let me know if you have any additional wuestions.

I concur with Peter looks like the one.
Get the old one rebuilt, but you'll have a spare which usually means you'll never need it for

Hi Thor -
I was informed when I began my fresh water pump replacement that this particular pump can’t be rebuilt. The raw water pump can be rebuilt, but not the fresh water pump.
Did I misunderstand/toss a possible useful piece of hardware?

Peter

Don’t worry the old pump is garbage. I replaced mine several years ago. Every thing is working fine. Gerard van Boven. NS 26C TABBY #83 Ft Lauderdale

They can be rebuilt. I think it is a bushing... Not 100 % sure could be a bearing. Mine cost $60 to rebuild. Many similar pumps were on old cars and these pumps are hard to find so they get rebuilt.
Westerbeke sells rebuilds for most raw water pumps, but the bearings are nothing special and can be found at any bearing supply.

Thanks Thor
Good to know… in case this replacement pump begins to fail in 20 or 30 years (the original lasted 32 years - no complaints on service life!)

Mine is a 83 and it failed in 2014 :)… was failing slowly for 2 years before I figured it out. Never been accused of being quick :frowning:
