Cutless bearing size for 30U

Does anybody know the OD of the cutless bearing on our 1” shafts?

I thought it was in the owner’s manual but can’t find it, Paul. Also I’m sure it was discussed by this group in the past.

Thanks Joe. I couldn’t find it in the manual either and I scanned the group for it as well before I posted.

I replaced mine years ago and will try and find the invoice for it.

Replaced mine last year with a Johnson Duramax 1" x 1.25" x 4" from fisheries supply, cut down to 3.5" long.

Cheers,

Tim

Thanks Tim,
Your boat is only a couple of months newer than mine so I pretty sure that will be the right one. I love this group. What a great pool of knowledge and experience.

Have you checked with Mike Quill?

No, I didn’t Ray.

Hi All

So to get straight to the point, does the Johnson Duramax 1" x 1&1/25" x 4" (cut to 3&1/2) fit the 30U ? Does it matter which end is cut? I’ve never seen one of these so not sure what to expect.

Thanks for responding

Jim

That’s what I remember replacing on my boat this past winter.

FWIW, the recently replaced cutless bearing on my 26U was 1" ID and 1.25" OD (also written as 1"1/4 OD), 4" long. Since both size boats have 1" shafts, I’d expect the same dimensions.

Taken literally, the 1&1/25" dimension offered above would be 1.04", which I’m pretty sure is not what was meant.

1-1/4" was mine. I used a tubing cutter to cut it from 4" to 3.5" length. I used a wheel cylinder hone to clean out the P-bracket and left the bearing in the freezer over night. Wrap it up well to transport it to the boat and it went in about 1/4 of the way without any tools. I tried using a piece of 3/8" rod I happened to have but that was a waste of time. I had read someplace that 1/2" was the minimum to use and that worked. The last 3/16" was the worst for getting the new bearing in.
I was too timid to use a sawmill to cut the bearing like the YouTube videos showed so I put a hacksaw blade upside down in the frame worked to cut the bearing. Put the blade through the bearing and then attach it to the frame. I didn’t cut the bearing from end to end but cut it far enough from each end that with a small cold chisel I could collapse it on itself and then I was able to knock it out.

Thanks everyone. Joe I feel confident about the size. And Bob, you are right! it’s not 1&1/25 but you understood my math. Bill thanks for advice on removing the old one.

At this point I’m not sure if it is the cutless bearing that is my problem but the evidence is pointing in that direction.
