Discourse option - Enable Slow Mode?

Something different - this is about how Discourse functions (now that we have a significant user population):

One of Discourse’s nice features is that it lets you edit your post to correct an oops or to improve the way something reads. Discourse has something they call “Slow Mode”, which will show you your posting after you click the “create topic”, or hit “reply”, but not really post it for a settable period of time, e.g. we can give ourselves a few minutes to look it over before it goes public.

So I will raise the question, how long (in minutes) do we want to delay a posting so the author can review it?

  • 0 - no delay
  • 1 minute
  • 3 minutes
  • 5 minutes
  • don’t care
0 voters

I vote for keeping it simple.

If you have a five minute delay!

Must you wait around five minutes and push another button to post?
 OR
Will it auto post if not changed prior to the delay?

 If it will auto post
Will it post even if you had already left the site?
Five minutes is a very long time to be required to hang around!

There is no change in what you will see or need to do. You post something. For x minutes only you can see it (and edit if you want). At the end of x minutes, it goes public - people will see it and those opting to get emails will get it.

I will add, for those new to Discourse, that you can always go back and edit it later. Slow Mode is to avoid the typos, missing sentence, etc. that you see when you post.

(I added that second paragraph after posting the first)

A majority of people expressing an opinion opted for 5 minutes of review time after the Create Topic or Reply is clicked and a post is actually made public. (Nothing will seem different - you will have a few minutes to tweak it if you like before anyone sees it).

This is set by category - I will work through them as time allows.

Thanks

Jon,

I cannot edit a post. When I try to edit a recent post, and hit the post button, this error message pops up…

An error occurred: This topic is in slow mode. To encourage thoughtful, considered discussion, editing old posts in this topic is not currently allowed during slow mode.

I made the original post yesterday. Then I typed the edit last night, this morning it still makes the error message. I cannot make any new posts without discarding the edit. I’m making this post through my email app.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Don

Don

This was not my understanding of how this works. Let me do some further investigation.

Jon

There was a site setting that needed to be tweaked. It will now let you edit older posts. Thanks for catching and reporting this.

(This was not something that I ran across when test slow mode, since as an admin I had no restrictions).

Jon

That works, thanks! My edit is now completed and posted.

Cheers,
Don
