In the last month i have had my 30U out for a bottom job and a few other odds and ends. One of the jobs was the servicing of the engine and Max prop.
When it went back in the engine stalled as soon as I put it in gear both in ahead and astern.
I did replace the control cables and they appear to be working properly. I only greased the maxprop so don’t think that is the problem.. The engine runs smoothly but when I put it in gear it stalls.
Brian,
Check the electrical connection to your fuel lift pump. If they are ok then perhaps it is the pump that is at fault.
I had this problem also. When I examined the pump I found the wires were poorly connected . After making them secure the W27 runs like a bear.
Brian: You didn’t specify what engine is in your boat. Not all 30s have the same engines. Also, knowing where you are, may get you help from a Nonsuch owner nearby .

Hi Brian - Have you tried putting your transmission in neutral and making sure the propeller shaft is spinning freely? It sounds like it may be jammed and that’s killing the engine when you put it into gear. Also, it could be that the transmission is not spinning - hopefully that’s not the case.

Here’s a shot in the dark based on something that happened to me. You mentioned you had ‘other’ work done. Did you by chance have the hull compounded and waxed?
When I had the bottom blasted for new paint I also had the hull compounded & waxed. When I started up the engine , it ran about 20 min and stalled soon as I put the trans in gear. I bled the engine, started up again and same result.
Eventually, I thought it through and said the engine was being starved of fuel and that’s why it shuts down. My next culprit was the lift pump (as mentioned here in another post) but coincidently at the same time, my wife noticed the diesel hull fuel vent fitting globed over with compound. That was the culprit. Not enough air to allow the tank from turning into a vacuum that lift pump could not deal with.
As I said, a shot in the dark, good luck, Gary /Aloki/ Oyster Bay.
Thanks for your response. I think that you may have hit the problem on the head. I had the hull salt blasted to get rid of the old anti fouling and it is very possible that the diesel tank vent has got plugged. I will check that out in the morning and see if that solves the problem.
You have a smart wife.
Brian: With the engine in neutral and not running, try and turn your shaft. It should turn easily. If not, then the problem has to do with the shaft since none of the work was on the trans. No matter what was done to the prop, the shaft would still turn.
