Good experiences with brokers buying or selling a Nonsuch?

Changes in the economy and other factors have led to the loss of a number of the boat brokers most familiar with Nonsuches. The latest case is Harris & Ellis, well known for their original history with Nonsuch designer Mark Ellis.

The INA’s looking into setting up a list of brokers who are knowledgeable about our boats, and who might be good bets for others looking to buy or sell one.

If you know one who you think should be on this list, would you please post on this thread:

  1. your experience with them
  2. the region in which they operate
  3. their contact information

Thanks,

– Bob

I’m a IYBA member yacht broker with Integrity Yacht Sales in Annapolis Maryland. I’ve been a broker since 2021 but my first Nonsuch sale was to myself last fall. I was asked to list it but I just fell in love on my first visit. I would like to encourage others to buy one when they are available so I will be an enthusiastic broker if you choose to sell. Our brokerage fee is kept to our industry standard of 10% or $5000 whichever is higher so selling through a broker is not for everyone but I’m happy to share my expertise with my fellow owners.

When we bought our Nonsuch in Niantic, CT, we worked with John MacPherson, CPYB. The Mystic area is pleasantly dense with Nonsuches, and he’s an easygoing, trustworthy broker with decades of experience. I’d be happy to work with him again. I have his card from five years ago; email was johnny.mac@att.net

I would hate to try and sell my boat myself. What a hassle. I think the brokerage fee is money well spent as long as you find a broker who either understands Nonsuches or is willing to learn and ask questions.

Brian - You are right for most people it’s a hassle but I’ve spent a fair amount of my life in sales so as a retirement gig I get to meet people, talk about boats, and hang around on them so that suits me fine. Attending so many surveys is an incredible learning experience too. Surveyors generally have so much knowledge about so many boat systems it helps me be a better Captain on any boat I step on.

Eastern Yacht Sales, with offices in Hingham and Vineyard Haven Mass. Shep Shove and Doug Weilhower have sold a number of Nonsuch to Mass Bay owners over the years.

I will say he was good to work with after the fire last year in the mast storage area at the shipyard. Kept me informed on the progress. They are still working to replace masts a year later.
