I will be replacing the cutless bearing and stuffing box hose this summer as part of our Electrification conversion. Is there any sealant required for the hose? On Amazon they pair the hose with 3M 5200. I can’t imagine that 5200 would be needed and I am really hoping that the guy before me did not use 5200.
I looked at both Don Casey’s book This Old Boat and Nigel Calder’s Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual. Neither talk about using a sealant for the hose. The do say you must used high quality non perforated hose clamps. The hoses are suppose to be changed every 6-7 years so I don’t think 5200 is the way to go. Hopefully someone like Paul Miller or Joe V will have some advice for you.
