This is about 1, 2 or 3 reefs.
I hope to post a few pictures that I shot while the sail reluctantly rose during my sea (river) trial on what was then Cimarron and is now Spirit~Wind. What baffles me is why is that line at the third reef in the second pic.

So there are only 2 inner and 2 outer reef lines that I can see. The second inner line is short by about 10 ft. And doesn’t reach the cleat on the port cabin top. I am thinking it is attached to the #3 outer reef as shown.
Thoughts?
I’m a bit confused. I see no #3 reef in either of the pictures you posted.
Do you have the original Nonsuch 30 owners manual for your boat, and/or the New Nonsuch Owners Quick Guide? They all have pretty good drawings of what the reefing layout should look like. That should be helpful for you.
If you don’t have those, you can find and download them by logging on to www.Nonsuch.org with your member email and password, then clicking on the MEMBERS tab and selecting MANUALS.
You may also want to take advantage of the INA’s member arrangement for getting consulting advice from the original Nonsuch rigger, Mike Quill. (Click on the same MEMBERS tab, and select MAINTENANCE.)
Bob,
Is not the line attached to the top reinforcement below 419 the #3 outer reef Kringle? The other picture shows the 1 & 2 outer reef lines I assumed . Anyway how can there be a third reef when there are only 2 reef lines on each side of the companionway to begin with? I am 50 miles away from Spirit~Wind so I have to rely on the pics to sort this out in my foggy head.

Either you are simply mistaken (VERY possible with a new NONSUCH - I spent years “mistaken”) or you just may have a sail that has THREE reef points and a boat that is custmarily rigged with TWO reef lines AND … whew … someone has passed the the #2 CLEW REEF LINE through the #3 CLEW REEF CRINGLE on the sail i.e. they screwed up. IF … you do have three actual reef points on your sail, well, lucky you, you can contemplate rigging the third reef lines sometime, down the road. Or not. (NOT is a reasonable option, believe me). For now, the most important thing is that the boat has adequate lines to rig the first TWO reefs. Plus, that picture seems to show that your sail is in nice condition - a lovely bonus.
Remove the upper reef line. If you need three reefs you may as well just use bare poles as you’ll be going down wind anyway. Not a chance you beat to weather with a 3rd reef.
The INA has the manual that shows how the boat was designed regarding reef points and the proper steps to reef .

I will be at the boat tomorrow and will check that the #2 line is in the #3 Kringle and see what line is in the #2. Hopefully there will be light wind so I can raise the sail at the dock. Yes I was well pleased at the condition of the cruising sail and she came with new full batten racing sail to boot.

You’ll get used to the rigging after a few tries out on the water. You have a lot of resources in your area - lots of Nonsuch owners in Essex and don’t be too shy to ask! I was double-reefed as soon as I set sail today and my NS30U performed beautifully upwind in 30 kn winds. Screaming at 8kn going downwind (see pic). I always laugh at the sloops trying to be a Nonsuch when I’m out in conditions like today - as I rolled past them too.

One of the first upgrades I will make to my boat is a set of gages that can get me to that set of readings. Right now I’m sporting the original Data Marine units that sort of work. The next will be to rig two reefs. I tried to do that today but it was breazin’ up a little too much to do alone. I will have some help tomorrow so will get it sorted then. Or maybe I’ll start to put her up for the winter and put it all back right for the spring launch.
Either way I’m loving it.
Revisiting the question of the third reef line today I discovered that Bob Neches reply about there being no third reef line was correct and Ernie Abugovs first assumption that I was mistaken was also correct. As I started to remove the second reef line from what I thought was the third cringle and working backward I ran out of cringles . So there you have it.
I never thought that there was a 3rd reef position, Brian. Some sailors like the idea but most don’t. Too many lines, too much spaghetti, etc. and. overwhelmingly, on an NS30 … not needed. These aren’t merchant ships or warships. If it’s blowing enough to require a 3rd reef on 30 feet of Nonsuch (which IS built to go to war in), you should be heading quickly back to home port.
Enjoy the boat (and gently wash ALL of your lines over the winter. They’ll love you for it.)
