Mailing List Users - How to avoid receiving Google Mirror postings

If you have Mailing List mode set in your Preferences, you are probably receiving an email for each posting in the Google Mirror category. This is basically a duplicate of the posting you already received in an email from Google. You may prefer this, since these emails have a Visit Topic button, which is a more convenient way of seeing the full thread than finding it in Google. However, if you want to avoid these emails, you can opt to “Mute” the Google Mirror category.

  1. Select the Google Mirror category - either by selecting it in the left column of Categories (if it’s listed there) or from the Categories box dropdown list (top center left). (BTW - When you select a category, you will then you will see only topics in this category on the screen)
  2. On the upper right, under your picture, there is a bell icon. Click on this to see the level of notification you want to receive from postings in this category.
  3. Click the Normal or Muted choice to stop getting emails from each new posting in this category. (These work a little differently as far as what shows on the main page and when you’ll get an email or notification).

You can, of course, select from the other notification choices, and do this for other categories. It takes effect immediately.

To get back to the normal, all category view, click on Topics on top of the left column, or the INA logo in the upper left.

or

You can leave things as they are and get all of the Google postings via Discourse, either via email or at the site. The emails are clean, single postings with access to the full topic with one click. The topics on Discourse are clearly laid out threads with access to the originator’s details by clicking on their picture (if they are Discourse members).

An update to this three month old posting -

When once again pondering if we could somehow send Discourse native postings back to Google without causing a loop (to google -to discourse- to google-to discourse), I realized that there was a flaw in the above posting… People are now replying directly to Google Mirror posts, so then you don’t want to mute the category. If you do, you’ll lose these local postings.

So, revised suggestion, if you are in mailing list mode and you don’t want to see Google postings twice (once from Google and then again from Discourse) but you do want to see all of the local Discourse postings in the Google Mirror category, the only thing I can think of is to set up a local email rule to filter out the Google emails (put them in a folder other than your Inbox).
