Quirk in the Google Mirror on Discourse

Sorry - that was sent too soon - to finish that up -

==================

The cause of the quirk when some Google posts are mirrored on Discourse is due to the “From” address in the posts. Every post on Discourse has to belong to some user. When Discourse can decipher an email address in the Google post, it will match it to a current user (if one exists) or create a “staged” (fake) user, based on the email address.

So, it’s perfectly happy with a From of:

Mark Powers La Reina 26C Vancouver, B.C. <rmp@shaw.ca>

(it makes up a username of Mark_Powers_La_Reina
with a name of Mark Powers La Reina 26C Vancouver, B.C.)

same with

Ward Woodruff <wwoodruff52@gmail.com>

Where it fails is on a From with no email address -

‘Aloki / Oyster Bay NY’ via INA Nonsuch Discussion Group

or

‘Thor Powell, Nonsuch 26, Victoria BC’ via INA Nonsuch Discussion Group

There is no email address to match with a user or to create a staged user. It then defaults to the first user (alphabetically), which was “_David…”

Since there is no “solution”, the work-around I used was to create a user “_GoogleGroupUser” to own these posts (and get rid of the “_” before David’s address).

There is a several decades old computer programming cartoon - frame one is labeled “BUG” and it has a picture of an ugly looking bug. Frame 2 is labeled “Feature” and it has the same bug dressed in a suit.

Best Idea - get your Discourse account and do postings there - -
