Ernie, if I remember correctly, your anchor has only seen water from the clouds or the hose, never from dipping in the lake. Hand signals on a 22 involve tapping the crew on the shoulder, if you have bothered to invite crew along. Why would you ever need marriage savers?
My anchor is slowly disintegrating from disuse. It’s the truth. For the hell of it, I’ll throw it into the lake this summer to see if it still sinks. Mostly, I sail alone but, with crew, I simply yell. Sandra loves the boat but doesn’t like to “tip over” so she doesn’t like to sail but arrives, to stay on the boat, “once it’s there”.
Yuh, that was a lucky find on those headsets. I do use Amazon, once in a while. They are the champs of “convenience”. One click and there you are but, with many products, there are far better alternatives. Sometimes, one must eat the shipping costs but it’s worth shopping around (especially these days).
Further to this heady discussion, I said that “I’d cave” but I meant I’ll support the general notion that headsets have their place on some boats but, as you point out, not on mine.
I always thought, “That’s cool – I want one,” was sufficient reason to buy boat-related material. If we’re actually supposed to need it, I’ll have to rethink my entire existence.
If you want it you need it. My niece had an express i liked: " I need it, I need it now!"
Boat show starts Feb 1. I will be there.
I do feel a sense of conflict. Like boat toys but I don’t like adding weight to La Reina. Extra weight means that other boats in the fleet have a greater chance of staying in the lead.
Only partly relevant but this is a good short video about sailing an IMOCA and a reminder to tune in and watch the upcoming Ocean Race.
There is a full endorsement of the use of “marriage savers” and a funny scene involving them as well.
Marriage savers, foils, moveable keels, all relevant to the Nonsuch fleet. I do wonder what happens when a foil moving at 18 knots comes into contact with shipping container or a large log.
Combining that with John Newell’s posts about oncoming foiling boats and falling drones, I’ve gotta say that the PR pitch about racing producing trickle-down technology benefits for cruising sailboats has never seemed more hollow.
What it’s teaching us a lot about lately are the dangers of underbuilt boats and failure/inability to maintain an adequate watch.
