New feature on INA website -- Shop Drawings for the 22, 26, 30, and 30 Ultra (as well as Niagara 35)

Folks might want to take a look at a new collection posted on INA’s Nonsuch.org website. A Niagara sailor, Bill Henry, rescued a really interesting trove of Hinterhoeller factory drawings for each of these models before they were shredded as various companies went out of business. These drawings cover an amazing range of previously unavailable information: e.g., masthead fittings and sheaves, chocks, pulpits, mast joint bolts, prop shaft details, all the way down to such small features as the flagpole holders and the mirrors in the heads.

There are between 20 and 50 drawings for each of the models covered. Many of the drawings for the 30s are explicitly labelled as applicable to 33s and 36s, as well. Because there also appears to be some additional unlabelled crossover between fittings for the models, if you don’t find what you’re looking for listed under your model, it’s worth checking the drawings for the others.

To look at them, go to https://nonsuch.org/Nonsuch-Shop-Drawings. Or start at the home page, and under the “Members” drop-down menu, select “NONSUCH SHOP DRAWINGS”.

A number of people deserve credit for making this find available. Bill Henry shared the material with us, acknowledged by the INA through a donation handled by Ray Dykstra to his favorite charity (the Royal National Lifeboat Institution). Bob Gehrman and Peter Troost dealt with getting the material organized and posted on the web site. Ted Eedson provided key coordination and editorial feedback.

Take a look.

Am I missing something? The drawings would be interesting, esp. ones that also have relevance to the 33s, but they are essentially unreadable. They don’t open as a PDF although they are marked as PDF files. Blowing them up makes them too fuzzy to read. Is there a workaround?

Hi Barry,

I blow them up using “+” and they are crystal clear. I’m look at NS 30 though.

Cheers

Barry,

Sorry you had a problem, Barry.

I’m only guessing at what went wrong, but I’m wondering if it’s a question of what you do after finding the list of drawings.

If you get to the list of drawings, and double-click on one of them, it opens up in Google drive. Looking at them there is not necessarily easy, because Google doesn’t automatically know about PDFs unless you’ve set it up that way. It offers to let you open them as a Google doc, Google docs doesn’t handle pdfs.

When you’re looking at the list of drawings, the two pictures I’ve attached illustrate different ways to download the file to your own computer. The first is what to do if you’ve already double-clicked on a drawing you found in the list. The second shows an easy way to download if you’re still looking at the list.

Either way should download the drawing of interest to wherever you designate, and should download as a PDF file. You can then open it with Adobe Reader, or any other PDF reader that you use on your machine.

There’s also a way to download a whole collection at once. I’ll put that in another post in the morning, if people indicate interest.

If this doesn’t answer your question, feel free to email me personally at the address in the from field above, and I’ll follow up with you one-on-one.

A big thank you to all involved. This is an invaluable resource for us.
Fortunately they open easily and are legible on my system.

A question for Bill Henry. Did he manage to save drawings for any of the Niagara? IF so have they been posted any where?

There are drawings for the Niagara 35 with the other Shop drawings. These drawings are a treasure trove. Lucky us.
