Nonsuch 36 year clarification

Hi I recently purchased 36 Nonsuch Hull ID ZHYN4009M83K .The broker that I
purchased the boat through says the model year of this boat is 1984.
According to the Hull ID I would say the boat is a 1983.The original bill of
sale from the 80s when the boat was new has 1984 stated as the model year
also.Perhaps the hull start date was 83 and the out of factory date 84?Any
clarification would be appreciated.

Jim,

I ran into the same scenario with Persistence -- built in 1989,
*commissioned* in 1990 -- suspect the broker refers to the commissioning
date.

Cheers,

I own Nonsuch 26, Hull # 249. ZHYN2249D89. ZHYN = Nonsuch, 2 = Nonsuch 26 (I
think), 249 = Hull Number, D = November start of build date (actually
November of 1988), 89 = Hull year. Boat sold by Eastland Yachts on June 5,
1989 and is a 1989 Nonsuch 26C.

According to the explanation of hull numbering, found on the INA web site (General Info>What is a Nonsuch>Hull Numbering System), the hull of your 36 began construction in June of 1983. The numbering system changed in 1984, and for hulls built from August '84 onwards the HIN reflects the actual model year.

I think your guess is correct. My boat was started in 1985, but delivered in
1986. It was first sold to another party, and before it was started he
withdrew from the deal and I stepped into the breech, and got delivery in
May 1986. Had I ordered otherwise and had not got his place in the
production line, I would have had to wait until August 1986.

The hull was probably moulded in 1983 but the boat was not sold until 1984.

In the US, the Coast Guard has had two slightly different systems for
creating HINs. As far as I know, none involve the year the boat was sold.
Some confusion may be caused by the difference between the actual year the
hull was laid up and the "model year" of the boat, just like we have with
cars (the 2010 cars came out in 2009). Here's a link to an article that
explains the two systems:
