Does anyone know where the starter battery was located on a Nonsuch Ultra 30 when it came from Hinterholler? At some point in time, the previous owner of my boat, placed the starter battery next to the front of the port engine mount stringer. See attached photos.
It appears that overtime, battery acid spilled onto the stringer, causing it to deteriorate. I am having the stringer repaired and would like to find a better location for the starter battery.
Thanks everyone,

Hi Mike - my batteries are mounted aft of the engine. I rebuilt the top of the platform last year and built a more secure setup to hold them in place better.

Our starter battery is in the stern on a platform in front of the steering quadrant with our three house batteries. Pain to access and maintain, but slightly more manageable with a mirror and flashlight so you can see the fluid level without pulling the batteries totally out.
Curious - when you bought the boat, what did your surveyor say about the lack of a required battery box? Putting a platform where the battery is right now and using a battery box could solve your problem.

Simple way to build a great battery box. Decide what size you need and mark out the pieces on a piece of 1/2 plywood. Before cutting put a layer of fiberglass on and left it dry. Cut the pieces, assemble, filet the corners with a thickened mix of epoxy and sawdust. Paint inside and out with bilge paint. I made mine about 1/2 too large and I fill the space with an old piece of carpet.
Tops are attached with a threaded rod embedded in the sides and wing nuts/washers.
Mine was under the port settee aft of the water tank. I moved it to the aft locker on said port side. The 2 house batteries are aft under the seat by the ladder on the starboard side.

If you get a chance, please send a photo of your battery installation. If I am envisioning this correctly, the batteries are located aft of the engine as shown in Bob Gehrman’s photos? And yes, the battery acid spillage problem would not have occurred if the previous owner had used a battery box.
