Oil change pump

What type of pump are people using to suck the oil out of their engines? I have tried two pumps so far and they are both a pain to use. Also, is it possible to get all the oil out of a W13 through the dipstick tube?

Many Thanks

I don’t think the dipstick hole on a W13 will accommodate an oil extractor tube. My W13 came with a flex pipe from the bottom of the oil pan to a bracket near the fresh water pump. A brass pipe fitting terminates this pipe. It is still a miserable filthy business to use but it is only once a year. (I have fretted for 20+yrs that this pipe will fail).

As Dick mentioned, I too use the tube that comes from the bottom of the engine (W21 in my case). I screw on an adaptor that accepts a plastic tube form the manual pump and suck-away. It takes a few cycles of sucking, removing the tube, inserting it into a empty milk bottle, expelling the oil and repeating the process. A plastic tarp keeps the old black oil from getting everywhere but, somehow, I always manage to get some on the woodwork. And then there’s the fun of removing the oil filter located back along the side of the engine mounted in a horizontal position…

And adding a ball valve at the end of the fitting coming from the oil pan makes it even easier. You connect the pump tubing with a fitting to the ball valve, insert the hose into the empty bottle, open the ball valve and pull the oil through. I always have a container bigger than the amount of oil I expect to remove. There may be a few drips but generally works very well.

The oil filter is always a challenge but someone mentioned using a diaper and it actually works well. (With apologies to my grandkids).

Brilliant, Joe. So you keep the pump tube connected to the drain tube ?

I’ve got what must be the same as Joe Valinotti, an electric pump that takes oil from that hose from the bottom of the pan. Pretty clean deal. It does not pump out nearly as much as the engine capacity, which I assume is accounted for by the oil in the filter.

Yep, it’s mounted and has a plug on the discharge hose. It will (mostly) empty the sump in less then 3 minutes. I loosen the filter, put a baggie on it then remove it. I also stuff oilsorb rags underneath to catch any drops.

I have the same system Joe, I find that I change the oil and filter more often as it is so quick, clean and easy to do. I would recommend it to everyone.

A good point, Brian!

Back when I use to have to have oil and diesel on board. I used a Topsider Oil extracter. It’s hose was able to easily snake into the oil drain hose of the Westerbeke with no problem. It also came in handy when I had to drain the fuel tank. Since it’s portable I now use it at home for changing the lawnmower and lawn vac.

What kind of pump?

I don’t have data on my pump, but it’s from West Marine and they only stock one, I believe.
