Hi Everyone
What are people using to extract engine oil for oil changes ? I have a vacuum hand pump that died and am curious if there are better options

ED Stazeenei installed a bronze hand pump and attached to the sump drain plug on Manatee. It’s clean, neat and convenient. The pump has about a one inch bore and the number of strokes it takes is drain the sump is insignificant.
Take the end cap off the hose, insert a container and pump , replace the end cap and your done. A great application.
I may be obvious but it works best with the engine warm and the oil hot.

I unplug the hose, place it in the collection container and press the switch - voila! 15 seconds later the sump is empty.

Why would anyone need to extract oil from a motor? Oh I forgot have an electric motor now.
But back in the diesel days I used a Topsider to vacuum out the oil from the iron pig. I also used it to remove the remaining diesel from the fuel tank when I converted to Electric Propulsion. REMOVING DIESEL FROM THE FUEL TANK

Here’s good solution done a previous owner of my Nonsuch 33.
Works well though not as neat as I installation I did on Manatee several years ago.
Here’s a picture of my N33 Manatee installation. It was perfect - sucked out all the sump oil quickly and spilled not a drop.
These bronze pumps are pricey but work flawlessly and require no maintenance.

Thor, I have an 12 volt fluid pump with an on off switch connected to the the sump where the drain plug was. The outflow, a flexible hose with a valve on the end, is long enough to put into an empty oil container.
An oil change goes like this:
Warm the engine.
Stick the end of the hose, valve open, into the container.
Turn the pump on, oil drains out quickly into the container
Turn pump off and close valve..
Change the filter and then dispose of the old filter and used oil.
Add new oil.
Takes about five minutes with no mess or fuss.

Gosh, it takes me that long simply to loosen and remove the oil filter!

I use the same as you did, no troubles so far.

I have been using one of these (that I got for free from a defunct employer) for ~10 years.
I’m getting better with it, but I call it the Exon Valdez and am always prepared to wipe up weird jets of oil that can get all over everything and know my oil change clothes will be oiled. Mostly my fault, but I’m thinking of looking for a tidier and more compact solution - there are barely two quarts of oil involved. I have to suck the oil through the dipstick hole on my MD11C… I like my fill solution better! Not a drip out of place from that! https://photos.app.goo.gl/bh9ZwpzTGnK5HkASA
After the person whose pump I was using thoughtlessly changed clubs, I bought a Pela 2.5L manual pump from The Rigging Shoppe [sic], C$47. Works great, simple to use, stores easily stbd near the transom.

I permanently installed a bronze fluid extraction pump connected to the drain hose from the bottom of the engine oil pan. Can’t recall the brand of pump. It was expensive but perfect for the job and will outlive the boat I believe. Not a drop of oil spilled or dripped in the oil change process.
Here’s a picture of the installation on my previous N30 with Universal M35 engine.

Hi Thor
like Bianka, my Minou no longer has a diesel engine. She was converted this summer. One of the parts that I salvaged from the old engine is the oil sump pump which I had intended to advertise on eBay for $50. If you are interested in acquiring it, drop me a note.

Back when I still needed to change the oil on BIANKA I used a vacuum pump on a can called a TOPSIDER. I also used it to drain the diesel fuel when I converted to electric propulsion: REMOVING DIESEL FROM THE FUEL TANK

I’m not sure what thread you are referring to. I was responding to Thor’s question about oil removal. I’m sure there must be one but I haven’t seen it or more likely have forgotten it.
