Racor Fuel Separator

We own a 1983 26’ Nonsuch Classic that’s equipped with the original Racor Diesel Fuel/Water separator. The filter element needs to be replaced but I’m having no luck locating the part number. Can anyone provide a part number? The filter element has brown plastic end caps, with one end that is press-fitted into a tube that belongs to the top portion of the bowl assembly.
Also, I believe the brown end caps signifies a 10 micron filtration capability…is this correct?

I think I have the same fuel filter. I recently replaced the filter and it had tan end caps. The filter I replaced was a 2 micron filter. The mechanic working with me said that was improper and replaced it with 30 micron. The number is usually printed pretty clearly.

My 30' Nonsuch uses a Racor 2 micron R24S filter.

I have the same Racor unit and it is, indeed, a 2 micron filter with brown ends. I think that the part number R24S sounds familiar. I would advise against a 30 micron filter because it would allow too much trash into the system.

Generally, the Racor filters are primary filters with the secondary filter being on the engine itself. It’s usual to have a larger micron element on the Racor and the 2 micron element on the engine filter. The theory is that you don’t want to reduce fuel flow by having too small of a filter on the primary. It depends on the fuel flow requirement of the engine but it’s typical to see a 10 micron primary and a 2 micron secondary. Best idea is to check the engine specs and recommendations.

Joe, thank you for anticipating my question about the proper size for the filter. I thought it odd that the PO had left me with a few 2 micron filters but the mechanic switched it out for a 30 micron.

That’s probably why my secondary never has any dirt in it. I felt the same way when I first started doing maintenance on my W27. However, the 2 micron filter appears to be working well. I do change it about 3 times a year, however, .

Having gone to more than one seminar on diesel engines(including Westerbeke) I use a 10 micron filter…Mike Schiff TAYVA N30U 87,Pultneyville NY

I was advised by an experienced diesel mechanic to use 10 micron in my Racor and a friend also heard from a Westerbeke representative in a seminar at the Boston INA rendezvous to use 10 micron as well… for the very reason you point out Gary. J
