If shaft is removed thru the cabin, does that mean that a transmission seal must also be replaced? What special cautions are required? Here is my expected process:
1.) Loosen clamps on rubber shaft tube
2.) Loosen packing nuts on shaft log
3.) Remove two piece shaft clamp between shaft log and trans
4.) Remove prop and shaft zinc
5.) Mark shaft flange and transmission flange to assure realignment on re-install
6.)Unbolt shaft flange from transmission
Not sure what I have missed. What are the pitfalls to be aware of?

That sounds about right Harry. If the top of the shaft has been scored you may have difficulty getting the top flange off, if not you’re in luck. If the flange is stuck the shaft will still pull through. You might need a press to get the flange off. I did and the shaft was toast afterwards. Had to buy a new shaft and flange. Bought a split flange which is so much better than the stock flange. Have the shaft dealer face the flange to the shaft for perfect balance. BTW there’s no seal to worry about.

Another way to remove and install the cutlass bearing is with a puller/pusher. You can buy one or make your own. Basically made up of some steel plate, pipe and long bolts. The pipe pushes against the bearing and the bolts pull the pates together pressing the pipe against the bearing. Can be done with the shaft in place if one of the plates is in two parts and the pipe is in cut in half so it can wrap around the shaft.
