Replace Hose between muffler and exhaust elbow

I replaced this hose a year ago but botched the job severely. Now I need to replace it again as it is leaking diesel exhaust.

I’m all ears, does anyone have some great ideas on how to fit this hose properly?

Heat, dish soap, magic?

Thanks in advance.

Double check the hose size. I thought mine to be 1 1/2 " but it turned out to be 1 7/8". Odd size but it went on pretty easy and clamped tightly.

My winter project. But I taking off the old to measure the size. Hose is labeled 2 inches… so we’ll see. Replacing the muffler and hose, there at lease 30 years old.

Thor,

Why replace the muffler? Mine is a nice stainless steel can with a drain. I suppose I could, but what would be the purpose of doing so?

From past experience on a different boat, stainless steel muffler will eventually rust, starting with pin holes that spray salt water mist all over the engine and other nearby stuff, creating more rust and salt residue. Stainless muffler was replaced by a fibreglass model.

That has happened to my muffler,. Pin holes in the welding. The new models are fire resistant fiberglass.. Stainless is really stain less…

The old hose had to be cut off. It was severely stuck to the rusted stainless muffler. To get it in and out easily unscrew the muffler from its mount, shift the muffler sideways , and then pull the hose down off the elbow. To install do the reverse.

I am trying to isolate the engine from the hull to reduce vibration. 2 years ago I replaced this hose with a piece of flex tubing, the stainless mesh type for auto mufflers and two short hoses, to make it more flexible. This modification did not help at all.
