Sail repair and batten change

I’m thinking of bringing my old sail into a sail loft for some repair and cleaning. I’m also thinking about having shorter length battens installed. The old sail (Soblestade ?) originally had full length battens that were so much trouble and heavy I eventually just pulled them out all together (or at least the ones that did not go over the side) and sailed without them. Has anyone changed the batten length on an old sail? Are their major pitfalls or extensive costs to doing so? Recommendations on a length for a cruising only sail?

There are standard length short battens, and standard length long battens.

You want the long battens.

The same batten pockets can be used, they just need to be made shorter, Same with the battens.

The sail should raise and fall more easily without the pressure of the full length batten on the sail slide,
