Saul stitching at wishbone

Hi All -

Has anyone else had a problem from the wishbone chafing the sail stitching? Any solutions? I guess sail tape is an option. This sail is 2 years old.

I would think sail tape would be a good low cost solution, however you could have a sail maker add a extra layer of material over that area..

Are there any rough spots on the boom? Mike Quill told me to use Boesheild T-9 on the boom. The Boeshield cleans and lubricates the aluminum.

In most sailing situations the choker should be tightened sufficiently to just flatten the sail clear of the wishbone. If this can’t be achieved even with a lot of force on the choker then the sail may have stretched, though a two-year-old sail should still be OK.

Appears to me you are not tightening the choker sufficiently

I think that I disagree on the choker being the problem. My impression is that choker varies most based on wind and relative position to the wind. Very often that in fact does involve the sail touching the wishboom, varying from a very short patch to quite long. I’m no expert for sure, so I hope others more knowledgeable will chime in soon. Where along the boom is the chafe located?

The Nonsuch wishboom is too narrow for the optimum setting of the sail in lighter weather. The Wyliecat solved the problem by having a much wider fitting at the front (a tube rather than a casting). Experienced Nonsuch sailors tend to allow the sail to billow over and under the boom in light weather. As others suggest one needs to keep the wishboom free of rough patches that will wear or snag the sail. Years ago, Foster modified his Nonsuch 22 Blueberry’s wishboom to match those of Wyliecats. He had to race against them in San Francisco.

FWIW, all the how-to guides on the Nonsuch.org website suggest that the main should be (and I quote), “just kissing” the boom in most conditions, not touching in heavy air, and fully in contact in light air.

If I notice the sail shape being changed / disturbed by the wishbone I immediately adjust sail trimand watch the reading on my knot meter increase

PS - Spell check got me again. Should be titled ‘sail stitching at wishbone’

If the wear is uniform along the sail and your previous sail was not exhibiting significant wear then the sail cloth has not been properly finished during the manufacture process.

You can clean and polish the boom.friend of mine did it with wet sandpaper all the way up to 1200 and it shone like a mirror.
