Sometimes I wonder about my neighbors...

The owner of the million-dollar boat in the picture below was quoted as telling fire officials that there were over 1000 rounds fireworks and ammunition stored on it. That cost of that much explosive material probably exceeds the cost of my boat.

The cost of the clean-up in the week since it caught fire has already exceeded the cost of my boat by a factor of five. It sank with 4000 gallons of diesel in its tanks. I don’t think they’ve been emptied yet.

This boat’s end tie was also at the permanent slip closest to the fuel dock, about 300 feet (or three of its boat lengths) away, and 1100 feet from my boat.

If you’re interested in a really well-located end tie in my marina, it looks like this one’ll be opening up in a few months.

Expect the dockmaster to be very picky about how much insurance you carry, however.

One of the reasons I like to be on a mooring or at anchor. That and always having a nice breeze flowing through the boat and being able to make it my floating pied-à-terre whenever I want.

Hi Bob,

Interesting story, thanks for sharing.

Is the initial cause of the fire, or at least the initial fuel involved, known yet? I.E., electrical, diesel, gasoline, propane? Or did one of the fireworks somehow ignite and started the fire?

In addition to current (not expired due to date) flares, we have a lot of expired flares on our boat and have no place to dispose of them. I suppose they are safer than fireworks but if a fire onboard occurred, they would add to the fuel for the fire. Not good.

Hi Ed,
In Canada, you can take your expired flares to the local Fire Station and they will dispose of them for you.

Here’s a link to Fox News video of the fire…

Thanks Alan. We tried the police department but not the Fire Station. Will try that next week.

Check out “love bug” mega yacht sank in West River Md. recently.
Was headed down or up the bay in late August, took on water run into West I surmise to shallow water to avoid complete sinking.

At the 2:14 minute of the news story you can spot the boom of A Nonsuch in the background P. The angle suggests it is a 26. Is that Me Gusta!

In the Vancouver area the fire departments don’t take old flares. Disposing of them is a challenge.

Mark,

I believe Steveston Marine will take old flares when you buy new ones from them.

Wow, good eyes, Mark!

I had to look really hard to find it a bit above the first “1” in the Fox 11 logo. It does indeed look like a Nonsuch.

But it’s not mine, and the only other 26 I know of in Marina del Rey is located elsewhere.

I’ll have to look for it the next time I’m out.

Responding to other posts:

  • At least in California, and I think for most of the U.S., fire stations here also accept expired flares. I’m personally a big fan of the new models of electronic flares made by Sirius, ACR, and other companies. They play nicer with fiberglass, ammunition, and fireworks than pyrotechnic flares.
  • Initial cause of fire has not yet been reported. Nor has the identity of the owners. Nor has the answer to the (excuse the pun) burning question of, “What were they thinking?”
