Stern thru hulls

Coming back from a swim I had a yikes moment as I found one of the plastic thru hulls on my 30U had a crack in the housing just inside the hull. There are two thru hulls next to each other. I think they are for the vent of the propane locker and a bilge pump. They are above the waterline but, I think they might go under when healing under sail so I dare not leave the mooring until repaired. I replaced them about 15 years ago but, don’t remember what size hoses attach to them. They have a 1 inch inner diameter on the outside. Anyone replace these recently and have some of the hose specs?

Mike - scary look for the stern, especially with the weather that is expected tonight for Long Island - maybe put a plug in them for the night?

If your set-up is the same as ours, the right one is the propane vent and the left is the electric bilge pump. The manual pump is the metal fitting above the two plastic.

I replaced the hoses in the past few years. The box of leftover hose in my basement (I bought 50’ on the web and it was cheaper then buying just what I needed from the regular marine shops) says 1" ID.

Good luck.

Hi Mike, when we got hit by lightning in 2012 I took the opportunity to replace all through hulls with bronze fittings. Many were brittle as yours were and the lightning scare prompted me into action. However I have to add that the insurance company ponied up for the repairs.

Thanks Lloyd! Just the info I was looking for so I can order the parts and start on repairs.

I was actually thinking about bronze replacements too.

I had a similar issue and replaced at least one with a marelon part from WestMarine (much cheaper from defender, but sometimes you don’t want to wait!).
