Thru-hull removal NS 36

I need to remove the existing thru-hull for the Datamarine/DMI depth-sounder and replace with a new one that will accept the new/current transponder. DMI indicates that the hole is the same for the new thru-hull. Does anyone know how the thru-hull was bedded/sealed into the hull? 3M 5200? Has anyone done the removal and what were the problems encountered? Thanks for any input!

The way I removed mine was to stand on it and push! My new Raymarine transducer fit the same hole.

Try heating the seal with a hair dryer.

You could just leave the old transducer in place, and cut a new hole.

in my west marine 2009 page 218, bottom left corner is a product “antibond 215” . I have successfully used it to soften 15 year old 3M2500 for easy removal. This will save you hours to remove the depth sounder.

You mmay want to consider filling the hole and mountain the new depth sounder inside the hull and shoot through the solid fiberglass . If done properly the loss of resolution is minimal and possible leakage eliminated.

Faced with a similar situation when I recently replaced my Datamarine
with a Raymarine depth sounder, while in the HOH, I used the new depth
sounder in a bed of silicone alongside the existing DM. It works
perfectly. I have done this before and it works as long as you use an
area of the hull where it is solid fibreglass.
